On OnlyFans, most of the money arrives in the first two days of a subscription, and keeping a subscriber after that is a different job.

A study by OnlyGuider, distributed as a paid press release on Yahoo Finance in May 2025, found that 83.3% of payments came within 48 hours of a person subscribing. The release said spending “drops sharply afterward.” It did not describe how the data was sampled, so the figure is best read as an indication, not a measurement.

If the first burst is where spending peaks, the question for a creator is what gives a subscriber a reason to stay. One plausible answer is not a better headline piece of content but the ordinary material around it: outtakes, preparation, small updates from a normal day.

The same press release put the share of subscribers who pay anything at 4.2%, and said 17.19% of subscribers initiate communication with a creator. It attributed 69.74% of revenue to messages and 4.11% to subscriptions themselves.

Taken at face value, those numbers describe a business where the subscription fee is a door and the relationship is the room. The release gave no definition of “engagement” and did not reconcile its communication figure with the share of subscribers it described as silent, so none of this should be treated as settled. But the direction is consistent with an old idea in media research.

In 1956 the sociologists Donald Horton and R. Richard Wohl described what they called para-social interaction, in a paper titled “Mass Communication and Para-Social Interaction: Observations on Intimacy at a Distance.” According to Britannica’s summary, the argument is that repeated one-sided encounters with a media personality can gradually develop into a parasocial relationship.

The word that matters is repeated. A single polished post is an encounter. A feed that includes the failed first take, the afternoon spent setting up, or a note about what went wrong with a plan is a sequence, and sequences are what build familiarity. Behind-the-scenes content is the format that supplies the sequence without needing a new concept every day.

Familiarity is not automatic. A 2022 study in Acta Psychologica of followers of one Instagram influencer with 12,000 followers found that following did not by itself create a parasocial relationship. Only followers with high involvement in the influencer’s subject developed a strong one. One account is a thin base, but it suggests everyday content works best on people who already care about what the creator does.

Large-scale platform data points the same way, with a caveat. A 2022 paper in the Proceedings of the International AAAI Conference on Web and Social Media analyzed all Patreon pledges, more than $2 billion, from the platform’s 2013 launch through 2020. Its abstract reports that patrons who support a small set of creators are more loyal to those creators, but also more likely to leave the platform entirely.

The caveat is that Patreon is a different platform with different content, and the paper does not test behind-the-scenes posts. What it supports is narrower: loyalty depends on a focused relationship with a few creators, and it is a reasonable inference, though not one the authors make, that a creator who feels like a known person is competing for one of those few slots.

Researchers who have interviewed OnlyFans creators describe a managed kind of closeness. A 2024 study in Sexuality & Culture by Luke Tynan and Conor Linehan of University College Cork interviewed seven Ireland-based OnlyFans models. It describes what the authors call “bounded authenticity,” an intimate experience provided within a monetary exchange.

The same study found that some fans mistakenly believed the connection was mutual, and that models often declined politely when fans tried to move the relationship off the platform, while trying to keep those fans subscribed. It also found that models who hid their faces screened material for identifying features before posting. The sample is small and reflects only the models’ side, as the authors acknowledge.

The practical lesson is that sharing ordinary moments is not the same as sharing everything. The creators in that study treated boundaries as something to manage actively, and anyone building a feed around daily life has the same job.

Non-explicit behind-the-scenes material takes familiar forms: bloopers and outtakes, a look at how a shoot is planned, a short update about a day, a poll that lets subscribers choose what happens next. None of it requires new equipment or a new persona, which is part of its appeal.

What the evidence cannot say is how much any of it lifts retention. OnlyGuider estimated global OnlyFans revenue at $7.2 billion in 2025, up 9%, according to FOX 4’s reporting. No public dataset reviewed for this piece breaks out renewals by content type. The case for behind-the-scenes posts rests on theory, adjacent platform data and creator accounts, not a controlled test.

What the release suggests about the gap
